MISSION service

At First Congregational Church, mission outreach is an essential part of the faith that we share. We welcome all people to grow in faith and in relationship with God and one another by participating in service to others. In addition to the opportunities here, many in our community give their service in other ways in the larger community. To volunteer or learn more about any of these service opportunities, please speak to a minister or contact the church office tallmadgefcc@sbcglobal.net.

Family Promise of Summit County

Our congregation partners with Northwest Church of Christ in Tallmadge to provide temporary housing for homeless families with young children. Volunteers prepare meals and stay overnight in the church to be available to the needs of the families. Family Promise of Summit County website.

Rebuilding Together

On the last Saturday in April, a team of about 40 volunteers from the congregation partner with Rebuilding Together to do a number of repairs and updates for the home of a person or family in one of our neighborhoods. Group leaders prep the projects in the week ahead and put the finishing touches on in the week to follow. Rebuilding Together website.

Summer Mission Tours

In its long history (it began in 1974), the youth mission tour has gone to many different parts of the United States and Canada. Currently, locations are chosen by the Associate Pastor, in consultation with the students, particularly the Youth Council, and other adult leaders. An effort is made to vary the trip from year to year so that students will be able to learn about different kinds of places.

The type of work, therefore, depends on the trip. In 2011 we served with agencies in downtown Chicago; io foodbanks and given to people in need; in 2012 we joined United Church of Christ Disaster Relief work in Birmingham, Alabama, following the loss of housing in the devastating tornado season of 2011.

In 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2013, the youth mission tour combined with the adult mission tour to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky, where students served alongside adults of all ages to repair and improve homes for local residents.

MIller Ave. UCC

We support the ministry of the United Church of Christ in west Akron at Miller Ave. UCC. In addition to financial support, our church takes a turn to provide a free Saturday lunch for the community several times a year at Miller Ave. UCC.

Faithful Servants Care Center

We are a partner church to this urgent care clinic which provides health care to people without health insurance or means to pay. As a partner, we have many volunteers who give time as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and non-medical services such as registration, chaplaincy, and providing meals for volunteer crews. We also contribute donations of supplies and funding. Faithful Servants Care Center Website.
